“Of one thing I am perfectly sure: God’s story never ends with ashes...” - Elizabeth Elliot
Self-care is always necessary, and it doesn’t always mean bath bombs, wine and those songs that make you feel warm and fuzzy. Self-care is just that, understanding that you are capable of providing support and love to yourself, with no permission needed from anyone else. This could be treating yourself to that carton of ice cream or investing in your brand by signing up for a master class, sometimes self-care is simply saying no, only you know what’s best for you and will bring out your best, bourgeois self. & When feeling burnt out, you need that self-given pampering to feel refreshed and renewed.
I’ve curated a list of items that have aided in my #burnout this month, and encourage you to always take care of you.
This month’s self care includes:
OGX Shampoo & Conditioner in Charcoal Detox
Charcoal Sugar Scrub (DIY) (Activated Charcoal from Amazon)
Candles (Holders from IKEA)
Sage
Journal
NYX Cosmetics Liquid Suede Cream Liquid Lipstick in Alien & Stone Fox
Hair Care - Cleanse & Deep Condition
One thing that always makes me feel better, despite the dreaded “wash day” is to wash my hair. I personally try not to use too many products on my hair at a given time, but the staples are definitely a good shampoo and conditioner. I’ll do a couple of rounds of washing to ensure all of the product build-up is removed, and I’ll condition with a plastic cap to ensure every curl gets as much juice and moisture as possible. I was drawn in by the @OGX Charcoal Detox shampoo and conditioner as a means to detox my hair and do a deep condition to get my curls to pop right back into shape! I was able to snag these from @CVS on a buy one get one half off sale, but even normally priced they’re reasonable at about $8 per bottle.
Body Care - Inside and Out
I have been hearing about the benefits of activated charcoal FOREVER! This can literally be used for everything; teeth whitening, digestive cleansing, external detox, everything! The porous texture traps impurities, bacteria, and chemicals, drawing them out from your skin, teeth, cells, and digestive tract. I’ve used this in a DIY body scrub made up of 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1/4 cup of melted organic coconut oil, 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal, and a few drops each of lavender and orange essential oil for a great at home spa treatment, and simply washed it off with my normal castille soap. I found this 1.5 oz jar of activated charcoal on Amazon for about $6 with Prime shipping.
Visual Care - Setting the Ambiance
Candles are always a win, and can be a reasonably priced method for relaxation. Did you see our post on “Wax and Wine” where you bring a bottle of wine and create your own candles down to the custom scent? If you’re looking for something different but fun and engaging to do, give them a try! If not, there are options from Bath & Body Works’ White Barn which can cost about $14 for the larger three wicked candles, or even a department store like TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. I found this cute little shop at the Booth’s Corner Farmer’s Market that sells hand dipped taper candles in sets of two for under $4 for the longest, but you can order them online here. I paired these with the candlestick holders from IKEA.
Energy Care - Protect Your Energy
We talked about herbs in our "Four Things to Burn When You're Feeling Burnt Out" article, but it still holds true for self-care as well.
The benefits of burning herbs like sage can clear the atmosphere of negative energy, but also can provide a huge sense of relief to know that the energy is cleared. It's always best to be intentional when using sage and pairing it with prayer, meditation, etc. is greatly beneficial in practicing self-care.
Mental Care
Journals are your friend! I cannot tell you how much of a fan I am of notebooks, journals, diaries, etc., they literally have all of the potential in the world because they allow you to get all of your thoughts out of your head and into motion! Whether to release the thoughts from a stressful time and get them off of your shoulders, or to foster creative ideas and begin plans to bring those visions to fruition, notebooks allow you to do literally everything! It’s so beneficial to physically see things mapped out, and to write them down to see a physical representation of your goals and aspirations is such a useful tool in accomplishing anything!
Physical Care - Cosmetics
NYX Liquid Suede Cream Liquid Lipstick
If you know me, you know I love a good lip, and NYX is my favorite brand of lipstick, hands DOWN ! Their liquid lipsticks are so reasonably priced (around $7 each) and stay present throughout the day, are transfer-proof, and I can get that matte look without my lips feeling dry. Their liquid suede brand is one of my favorites they carry, and if I’m feeling adventurous I know I’m guaranteed a good feel and pigment with any color I choose from this collection. I wore both the colors here in my hookah photoshoots (see my insta @alexispjordan to see how they turned out!); I wore “Alien” which is a black and filled the center with “Stone Fox” which is a dark grayish blue hue.
Practicing self-care can sometimes simply be doing just what you want and not allowing yourself to be pressured into any task that you are not up to. Priorities always are just that, so don't get too carried away with the #treatyoself mantra, but make sure you're making time for you.
What are some ways that you practice self care? Head to my insta @alexispjordan & let me know how you #treatyoself in the comments!
